This prolific family arrived in Australia with the immigrant ship "Maitland", containing no less than 22 members of the family spanning 3 generations.
The "Maitland" left Gravesend on 24th June 1838. It was to be a horror voyage for all on board. See Bruce Fairhall's web site.
Scarlet fever and typhus claimed 4 children: Sarah aged 15, Henry 1 year & 7 months, David, 11 months and Thomas 11 months.
Another boy, John, died in quarantine aged 3.
The entire party settled initially on the South Coast of NSW, in the areas around Dapto and Jamberoo. Some later settling around Cambewarra, Crookwell and a large contingent moving to the North Coast of NSW and some to Queensland.
The "founder" of the Australian line is William Vidler born about 1775 in Battle, Sussex
He married Mary Copper on 29th December 1796 at Sandhurst, Kent. They had 9 children:
Mary died on 27th September 1829 at Sandhurst.
William married Mary Smith (nee Maynard) at Sandhurst on 15th January 1832.
They had one son, born at Dapto:
Kezia Vidler and George STEADMAN
Kezia, the sixth child of William and Mary Copper, arrived separately on the ship "Sir Edward Paget" on 14th February 1842 with their 4 eldest children.
They settled in Cambewarra, where they farmed.
George died 15th March 1876 and Kezia died 25th April 1894.
They are buried in Cambewarra Cemetery.
