Samuel Patterson was born about 1813 in Ballinderry, County Antrim, Ireland, the son of Joseph Patterson and Ann (nee Thompson).

Susannah McMullen was born about 1815 in Aghalee, County Antrim, the daughter of Archibald McMullen and Mary Jane (nee O'Hara).

They were married in the Church of Scotland, Magheragal, Co. Antrim Ireland on the 12th January 1841.

It was a mixed marriage - he was Protestant, she was Roman Catholic.

Having no support from their families, they decided to start a new life in Australia.

They arrived in Sydney on 17 August 1841 on board the ship "Pearl" after a 4 month trip.

Susan was 7 months pregnant when they arrived.

They settled in Kings Plains (Blayney) 37 km south-west of Bathurst, NSW.

His occupation is listed as a shoemaker and later a farmer.

They had 10 children:

Dorothy 1841 - 1902 (married Thomas Burke)
Annie Mary 1843 - 1923 (married Robert Gerard Daly)
Samuel Joseph 1846 - 1911 (married Mary Ann Vaughan)
Joseph John 1849 - 1907 (married Catherine Mary McNamara)
Elizabeth Mary 1850 - 1893 (married John Joseph Burke)
Susan Mary 1853 - 1938 (married Peter Finn)
William Robert 1855 - 1916 (married Catherine Mary Leahey)
Mary Jane 1858 - 1928 (married Daniel Joseph Sprouster)
Bernard Archibald 1860 -1939 (married Isabella Hannah Rock)

Samuel died 26th November 1888.

Susan died 8th December 1897.

They are buried together in the Catholic portion of Blayney Cemetery.
