He married Mary Ann Vaughan, the daughter of James and Annie (nee Killeen) of Cherry Tree Hill near Mudgee on 23 April 1868 in the Cathedral of St Michael & St John, Bathurst,

Samuel ran a butcher shop in Adelaide Street, Blayney where he trained all 10 of his sons to be butchers.
In later years Samuel was also a dealer in hides.
Samuel and Mary Ann had 14 children:
Samuel was a founding member of Oddfellows Lodge Blayney in 1883.
He was also a member of Blayney Municipal Council.
He passed away on 30 August 1911 in a private nursing hospital in Blandford Street, Bathurst operated by his daughters Annie and Evelyn.
His widow, Mary Ann Patterson moved to Sydney where she lived with her son Albert until she died on 19 January 1913.
Samuel and Mary Ann are both buried in Blayney RC Cemetery, but their graves are not marked.
