Ann WATTS and John BADANS were married in Port Nicholson, New Zealand on 21 October 1842.

Ann was born in Hawkhurst, Kent in 1822.

John was born in Poplar, London in 1817.

He was the Chief Officer on the ship "Oriental" on which Ann and her family had sailed from Plymouth to New Zealand in 1841.

They settled in New Zealand to try the challenging life in the new colony.

They left New Zealand on board the schooner "Comet" and arrived in Sydney on 15 October 1847.

Also on board were Ann's sister Matilda and her husband as well as her brother Edward.

John joined the services of the Illawarra Steam Navigation Company.

He became the first mate of the "William IV".

After 4 years, he left the company and decided to try his luck on the Victorian gold diggings where he had considerable success.

He returned to the Kiama District where Ann's parents had settled and purchased a property not far from Minnanurra Falls, near Jamberoo.

He built a house there and he and Ann raised 11 children:

  4. Alexander J. 1850 - 1933
  5. Edward 1852 - 1926
  6. Anne Martina 1855 - 1924
  7. Lucy Celia 1857 - 1920
  8. Sarah Ann 1859 - 1942
  9. Clara Jane 1862 - 1894
  10. Sophia Mary 1864 - 1922
  11. Martin Walter 1867 - 1917

John died 22nd January 1890 in Jamberoo aged 72.

Ann died 3rd October 1902 in Jamberoo aged 80.

They are both buried in the old Methodist Cemetery, Jamberoo.
