Lance was born in Blayney, NSW on 27 July 1890. He was the youngest of 11 boys and 3 girls.
His father, Samuel Joseph Patterson had a butcher shop in Adelaide Street, Blayney.
Ivy was born in Cowra, NSW on 18th September 1899, the daughter of Charles & Hannah Kelly.
She was a widow, previously married to Frank Mullavey and had two sons, Reg and Bill.

They were married in St Joseph's Church, Newtown 18th September 1918.

Lance moved to Sydney and became a tram driver at Randwick Depot.
They lived at 177 Victoria Road Marrickville. The children attended Chapel Street Public School.
The family moved to Burton Street, Randwick in 1927. (The house is still in the family).
He was a keen cricketer and bred canaries. They used to head to Saratoga near Gosford for holidays.

Lance & Ivy had one son -
Lance died 3 July 1939 of a heart attack while at work on the trams.
Ivy died in hospital in Randwick in 1944.
Lance and Ivy are buried in Randwick Cemetery at South Coogee.
